Minhui

Hello! My name is Minhui Roh and I am 18 years old CEGEP student. When I was in high school, I had participated in an environmental leadership program called C-Vert. We had a session once a week where I was able to meet some people passionate about making the world more “green” and more sustainable. I learned a lot about climate issues as well as other social injustices. After I was certified as C-Vert+ (basically a C-Vert alumni), I hadn’t had many chances to interact with other activists due to heavy academic workload.

However, this project organized by the Evergreen Youth Lab reminded me once again that although some issues might not be visible in our daily life, they are undoubtably present in the society. I noticed that environmental consequences may be subtle to most people especially the ones living in an urban area like Montreal. Therefore, they tend to be forgotten easily and a lot of people might not even be aware of them. Systemic analysis is what we need to frame these issues that may seem obscure. During the workshops, me and my teammates used the Iceberg Model. Visible part of the iceberg represents events that happened while hidden portion designates patterns, structures or mindsets that influenced the event. I believe education is a key to solve major climate problems.

Beside is a collage representing my passion about healthcare equity. In the near future, I expect everyone to have easy access to affordable healthcare. As an immigrant from South Korea myself, I have witnessed many people relying on non-prescription drugs instead of going to hospital fearing language barrier, awfully long waiting time, and ineligibility to healthcare card. Some people were surprised to learn that their ambulance fee is more than three times expensive than that of a Canadian citizen. Recently, there are many studies demonstrating how COVID-19 particularly has heavier impacts on marginalized communities. People in developing countries had less access to vaccines. In short, I know that it won’t be easy to realize the ideal, but I will continue to do researches and find out what can be done.
